Ph.D Project

"Friendship as a Genre. On the Tension between Public and Intimate“

Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Hans-Helmuth Gander

Tutor: Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bröckling

Words of our everyday language like love, trust, faithfulness and friendship seem to be acknowledged as commonly understood categories across languages and even cultural borders. Simultaneously, these terms make claims on the categorization of emotional, individual and intimate relations by way of articulating private imaginations, emotions and intonations. The dissertation project “Friendship as a Genre” tries to analyze this convergence of publicly shared semantics and radically intimate meanings. On the basis of friendship in feature films it will analyze specific attributions of meanings in the second half of the 20th century.

Although there are numerous suggestions to define the term “friendship” from philosophical, historical and sociological perspectives, the relation between its use in public medial semantics and its intimate and private conceptions and enactments remains unclear. Hence, the dissertation aims to analyze the symbolical and emotional presentations of “friendship” in public semantics, its mediation in feature films, and its uses as a commonly understood vehicle for intimate categories. It therefore takes as a starting point a in the dissertation clearly specified genre “friendship” in feature films in which public relations and intimate actions are merged and increasingly presented as existential and tragic problems. In addition, the dissertation tries to find a way to engage with feature films as a fruitful subject of philosophy.
