Although there are many biographies about Anne of Austria there is an important lack of well-founded historic studies about her court and the royal household. The present dissertation project focuses on a more detailed research on life at court and the Maison de la Reine. In this regard it is possible to analyze general mechanisms at court and the queen’s sponsorship of the courtiers. Moreover, the reasons of the relationship between a patron and her clientele favourites can be elaborated. There is no doubt that persons who won the queen’s favour were guided by their own interests, but in the same way Anne of Austria’s motivation to gather a certain kind of persons around her has to be considered. How far did personal feelings of affection play a role? Did the queen calculate her decisions and actions? In this context the formation of the royal household is to be analyzed: How many representatives of the higher nobility, of the lower nobility and of the noblesse de robe constituted the court and had an impact on its household? It is useful to reconstruct the kind of patronage the queen practised. Did the courtiers obtain a paid office, a (non-paid) honorary office or other presents and gratifications? Besides, are there any differences between the patronage from 1643 to 1648 and the period after the Fronde (from 1653 onwards)? In this regard it is also interesting to discuss the idealized image of the queen (during her lifetime and especially after her death) concerning her virtues and her charity actions (f. ex. pauper relief).
