"Russian Émigrés in Berlin – General Aleksej Aleksandrovič von Lampe and his networks, 1922-1945."

Approximately two to three million Russians fled their country after the October Revolution 1917 and during the Russian civil war. During those years about 300.000 to 600.000 émigrés came to Berlin. The German capital immediately became a stronghold of the Russian emigration in Europe. The infrastructure and the cultural life of the so-called “Russian Berlin” developed rapidly: Russian aid agencies, schools, publishing houses and magazines arose around the city. The rapid growth of a Russian subculture within the German capital was motivated by the émigrés’ wish to conserve their culture and traditions as well as using and passing on the Russian language. Since 1922 General Aleksej Aleksandrovič von Lampe was also living among the Russian émigrés as a representative of the White Army.

This dissertation focuses on the General Aleksej von Lampe and his diary, which he wrote between 1919 and 1965. The purpose of this work is to conduct a double analysis: Firstly, it is a modern biography of von Lampe, in which his experiences during the Russian Revolution, his emigration and the World War will be analyzed. Secondly, the dissertation will contribute to the study of the Russian colony as a network. In the process, von Lampe’s perception of the every day life in the colony as well as the political background of the Weimar Republic and the National Socialism will be taken into account.

On the one hand, this dissertation will examine how relationships could constitute themselves within an unknown environment and how they were marked. The project aims to analyze, if friendships existed between individuals with different social backgrounds in the colony as well as between different nationalities. On the other hand, this thesis examines how much impact events like the Machtergreifung (seizure of power) of the Nazi Party, the Hitler-Stalin pact or the outbreak of the German-Soviet war had on these relations during the 1930s and 1940s.

The main purpose of the dissertation is to shed light on the internal world of the Russian émigré colony, which has not been extensively studied by any previous researcher so far. Particularly the questions of the scope of the Russian émigrés, the impact of political changes on the their lives and their networks within the colony are of great interest for me.
