Ph.D Project

American Pragmatism in the Making: On the Importance of Friendship between Chicago Schools First Generation in terms of the history of ideas

The starting assumption is the eclectic adoption of American Pragmatism in Germany, notably within Qualitative Research debates. This becomes especially apparent in contrast to current practices in the U.S. Whereas in Germany Pragmatism serves mainly as a criterion of epistemological foundation a distinct emphasize on its sociopolitical implications can be observed in the U.S. The latter follows an ideal of researchers holding a membership in both: academia and social movement. In the tradition of studies of scientific knowledge my research examines this interventionist notion of science and focuses therefore on the relationship between George Herbert Mead, John Dewey and Jane Addams in the beginning of the 19th Century. Their friendship is acknowledged as context from which American Pragmatism developed. This group of intellectuals was bound not only by the self-set demand of always being theorist and activist at the same time but also by the shared vision of driving Democracy forward.
Source materials of the study are first of all selected writings on Pragmatism authored by Mead, Addams and Dewey. This includes their books, journal articles, brochures and published speeches. Secondly the correspondence between the three protagonists will be hermeneutically analyzed in view of their positioning to each other.
The research aims firstly at a more holistic understanding of Pragmatism as equally being an epistemological theory of action and a manual of scientific involvement in society. Secondly the study is designed to reflect on the premises of this interventionist understanding of science. This reflection is especially relevant when we consider the changing research landscape towards the increased funding of applied research.
